Transaction reality · Before you buy
“Recurring revenue” may only mean customers bought more than once

The phrase sounds safer than it may be. Revenue can repeat because of habit, the seller’s relationship, temporary demand or paid advertising, not because customers are committed.
How it appears in a real transaction
Real durability comes from customer behavior, contract rights, renewal history, pricing power and the reason customers stay. A recurring label alone proves none of them.
A practical example
A service company calls 70% of its sales recurring. Most customers have no agreement, the owner handles every relationship and cancellation history is not tracked.
What to do next
- Separate contracted, subscription, repeat and one-time revenue.
- Review churn, renewals and customer cohorts.
- Read termination and assignment clauses.
- Identify relationships owned personally by the seller.
